FAQ

  • Is there a starting date for Travel Writing Boot Camp?

You can start ANYTIME. As soon as you sign up, your course begins the date of your choice. Your first assignment is due within one week to that date (and every subsequent date following. ie: Assignment 2 is due a week later; Assignment 3 is due a week after that). Now, if you're a fast writer, you could complete the course much sooner, like 4 weeks. The reason the course is 6 weeks long is because I have taught travel writing courses that run 10-weeks long, and students tend to drop off halfway through. I think two months is quite exhausting these days in our busy lives, and it's the general feedback I receive from students. ***The course is open to anyone anywhere in the world.

  • Do you provide anything else other than 6 lectures?

Absolutely! In the course, I offer a detailed introduction on how I got started as a travel writer and everything I did to become successful. This way, I help you see a genuine path to becoming a travel writer. Travel writing leads to other paid opportunities, and I'll discuss those as well. I also offer the inside scoop on press trips (when a business fully pays for your trip, a secret in the travel industry) and how you can get invited on these fully-paid for trips that cover your airfare, hotels, all meals, activities and more. Press trips (or individual trips) are how a good percentage of successful travel writers get to see the world... and get paid for it. In the end, I reveal all the knowledge you need to become a great, successful and working travel writer.

  • How does the course work?

Travel Writing Boot Camp w/ Jimmy Im is 6 weeks long. Once you sign up, you have access to all the content. Each of the six lectures focus on a specific story type you can sell a publisher, followed by an assignment due every week. For this course, you will write the weekly assignment, and I will offer critique for your story. ***This is the only online travel writing class taught by a professional, full-time travel writer who personally edits your work. It’s true: I will be reading all your work, and I’ll be offering critique!

  • How is your course different from other travel writing courses I see online?

Great question! The most honest answer I can give is that you will be mentored personally by someone who is still working in the industry and genuinely successful as a travel writer. If you want to be the best, you have to work with the best. I noticed some instructors for other courses haven’t published a story in many years, proving they may struggle with how competitive the industry is. Many other instructors don't have published clips with major outlets, which raises a red flag for me, and other travel writing courses invite you to download a package written by a travel writer-- and that's it. No personal mentorship, no critique on work and no one-on-one phone calls. I offer all of this. Not only have I been a successful travel writer for 15 years (and going), I am completely transparent with you, and I encourage you to Google me to see how I continue to get published regularly in major outlets.

  • Why are you teaching travel writing?

I've been working in the industry for over 15 years— my reputation precedes me. I decided to take all my knowledge and experience from my successful career and bestow it unto those who want to make it in this industry. I've taught travel writing for 5 years, and it has brought a new kind of appreciation in my life. While I love getting published, there's nothing more rewarding than having one of my students sell a story and see their name in print.

  • What are the 6 assignments?

The order of assignments will be as follows. Assignment 1: “Escapes” piece Assignment 2: News item/Mini-report Assignment 3: Destination piece on a landmark or event Assignment 4: Day trip close to home Assignment 5: Round-up Assignment 6: Personal Essay.

  • How long are the assignments?

Each assignment you submit will be between 500 to 600 words, with the personal essay maxed at 2,000 words. The reason why the bulk of assignments is short (500 to 600 words) is because most outlets hire shorter word-length stories from new writers, and it's a general trend in the industry (you rarely see long travel stories online).

  • How much is the course?

I'm pleased to offer Travel Writing Boot Camp w/ Jimmy Im in three tiers: Standard at $495; Plus at $895; and Pro at $1,295. Scroll down below for more information. I do offer payment plans, as well as a discount for college students/recent grads. If this applies to you, feel free to email me.

  • Will I be taking the class with other students?

You will not take a class with other students. The main reason I do not offer a group class is because, from experience, students don't read other students' work in this type of class, and they're primarily concerned with instructor feedback. That said, you're essentially getting private lessons from me. However, each assignment will have an open discussion forum where you can communicate with other students, and you're encouraged to ask questions, leave feedback and exchange ideas, stories and comments with other students.
